Collaborative Film (With Kinara)
In this project we were to partner up with the person we worked with on our first workshop and create a 3 minute film that explores our Locality. Me and Kinara wrote down and mind mapped our ideas, and communicated through Google Teams plus Whatsapp to complete and make this project to complete this. The film was edited and created on I-Movie, this was my first time using this but Kinara helped me get a sense of how to crop and move footage around. I had one idea to use written cards to discuss the concept of the questioning of ones idea of belonging and what I’ve been asked in the past about regarding this. It was a good Idea at first but we both agreed to use the first footage of my hand removing the written card “Where am I locally?” as a title sequence.
Idea Proposal
One of the first things we connected with was our local shops from our photos we had taken in our area, we wanted to film and speak to people who work and know us and share these stories on film. Unfortunately we had to self isolate as one of our classmates from that prior lesson had been positive with Covid. We then had to compromise and decided to film things from home that showed our daily routines and even views from our homes, which gave it a sense of human connections within our locality, although I live in Battersea and she lives in Lambeth.
One of the surprising things was that she was raised up in Bournemouth and me in London, yet there was so many similarities and connections that we had just from the footage we had filmed from home and being raised in the same country. So the final idea was to connect our footage together that showed many similarities between them.
Editing and collaborating together
On I-Film, Kinara showed me how to snap and cut the separate phone footage together. After Air Dropping the phone film to my Mac Book, I dragged the footage from my desktop (Also to note that Kinara sent me her full footage on Whatsapp, but we cut the image up by dragging the film over and over again for the parts we needed).
Then arranged the footage side by side, by cutting it off where we think we should connect the imagery with.
We watched the film over several times to see how the images flowed until we were satisfied with it. To transfer the full footage to Kinara, we used WeTransfer.com
First Feedback On Film
It was overall a good feedback and the comments and recommendations given were that we add audio to our film to give it more character. I also commented that working with her was fairly easy as we were agreeable and pleasant throughout the process, we both also saw eye to eye in conveying a message aesthetically, and agreed to cut things out when it was necessary.
The feedback experience was very good, I think I learned about how to compromise and take constructive criticism in a positive way to improve things that we couldn’t see on this project. I also learned a lot about people’s locality and homes, the fascinating thing was that although some are studying from home, we could explore and see their homes through their eyes all over the world. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience.
