Poster 1 Design and Development
Research for poster 1
From our Locality work, I’m to make poster based of the research I’ve done for that, I once again took inspiration for different types of Typfaces, and thought what if I could trace these images over my ipad, and trace this on my sketchbook? I thought this was very appropriate as this was about my locality and the letters I’m surrounded by everyday.
I first tried this to experiment and get familiar with this type of tracing but it was a tad small at first, so I tried again and traced larger letters as well.
With my traced letters, I drew over them, then cut each letter out individually to form my Typefaces to print on paper, I didn’t have any ink or paint so I ended up using my graphic pen to print out my letters.
My final result of my printed words.
Poster 2 Design and Development
The second poster we are to make is from a newspaper headline, I noticed a lot of headlines about the USA election this year in the newspapers, one of the funniest I saw was about Trump spreading misinformation without fact checking regarding his so called victory in the elections this year. I picked up the New Yorker and The Gaurdian newspaper as a source of material and inspiration home to create something from it.
Jamie Reid
My work will be inspired from Jamie Reid’s collage work, I noticed he has made something based on trump as well. Most of his work is quite controversial but I find it quite rebellious and satirical in terms of humour. None the less I quite like his style in collages and handmade work.
I tried to come up with ideas in what to do with Trumps image in a humorous way. I thought about what he reminded me of when he spoke in his speeches, and the image of a muppet version of him and South Park as well came to mind, so using a scalpel and a metallic ruler, I cut the face image in half to mimic him doing his speeches as a joke.
Then on Affinity Photo I uploaded the image into a A2 format first, then played around with the lighting settings to increase the intensity of colours (especially to bring out the orange). I the used a paint bucket tool just to play around and filled in the white to be even whiter and any gaps in the letters. I also tried it with the letters and highlighted it red, I thought the colour would signify alertness/danger but the green to signify safety when it says cut off because the speech he gave out was again spreading false information and riling people up to believe what he says is true. I added the horns and tail as a final touch as a second option poster.

Research and References for Poster 3
Littering and Signs
From my photo research from my previous unit, I wanted to raise these images from what I saw in my local area concerning disposable PPE and the environment, which isn’t just hazardous for it but the animals that cohabit this area as well.
Secondary Research (Signs and Signals)
I looked at imagery that signified instructions but as a universal language, not just by imagery but with colours as well.
PPE Littering
During this Pandemic, I feel we are focusing much too much on this disease epidemic and ignoring the environmental issues which is tenfold getting affected by disposable PPE not just mass consumerism.
Proposal
I’m thinking to design a poster that instructs people in throwing away disposable face masks correctly, which is actually very easy by just pulling the strings hard enough it breaks apart. I was thinking to do “Stop. Pull. Throw.” but then my partner gave me his feedback that it can be misconstrued and sound wrong to some, so it was changed to “Stop. Detach. Dispose.” instead. I’m thinking work with primary colours, primarily colours such as the traffic light signals (red, yellow, green) which is universally recognised, to translate to people about to throw away disposable masks.
I tried to make shapes out of simple blocks in order to make this Typefaces, using signs as inspiration, and the primary colours from traffic signals as well.
Feedback
In one of my feedbacks, it was unanimously agreed that the word “Detach” was a bit unreadable. So I adjusted the words closer on Illustrator, as well as the “E’s” having three lines, which the purpose of that was that it could resemble hands but that too was misunderstood, so on Illustrator I removed the middles lines ob both to make it look like an E, then copied and saved onto Indesign and exported as a Jpeg file.
My feedback during this exercise for the people in my group.
Poster 4 Design and Development
For my fourth poster, the task was to find a text message that we last received from someone and make that poster for them, I chose this poster from a colleague from work just after Lockdown who was asking how I was and wishing me well. I think it kind of embodies the kind of care and concern we all have for each other in these uncertain times and I decided to make this one for her and her caring words.
I thought initially at first may be to do a design based on text message bubbles that we get and the information that surrounds it.
But I looked at a variety of illustrators that are a favourite of mine and learned a tutorial on Instagram in how to produce a seamless pattern by Becky Thorns. And I thought about how the Typography could look aesthetically pleasing alongside the pattern, so in the end, I tried to look at different calligraphy online through google search and settled for this initial design for my idea.
Before I began working on my poster, I had to make my pattern first, I decided to create this by trying out Procreate in drawing my design, and used the love hearts in the text message as inspiration. I wanted the colours to be soft and subtle so I chose a muted colour scheme pallet for this, and I added the pea pods as a touch to symbolize being two peas in a pod, as in her and me as friends.
I recorded a timelapse video showing the process of how this pattern was produced. First I had to open a evenly square layout on Procreate to make the seamless pattern, I drew my design in the middle of the square, making sure the edges don’t touch, then duplicated the layer in two. Using the Magnetic and Snapping settings as a guide, I had to budge the images to the middle side by side with edges not touching, and did the same with the top and bottom.
Then in the middle of the tile, I filled it in with the rest of the design with the pea pods and flowers. This then created a tile that I can duplicate and merge these layers creating my seamless pattern. Although this had worked, I had to overlap the layers as I realized the middle of the tile from the beginning was a little too big near the edges. None the less it still produced the seamless pattern but making sure I added the muted pink background using a Charcoal brush to fill in the layers, merge it then start to duplicate it repeatedly to create this pattern.

Final Poster
In My sketch book, I had to try draw out my calligraphy with the text from my friend’s message, but using inspiration from calligraphy I found online but adding my own style to it. I had to practice it a few times, I also noticed I didn’t use any guidelines to help me, so I drew down some pencil lines to get a sense of how to arrange the letters using cursive lettering.
Before with lines (left) and after rubbing it out (middle). Before uploading it to Procreate to draw over as reference.
Here I outlined the Handwriting I wrote with my Tombo Pen, using the Studio Pen brush to draw over, before removing the photo layer to add another layer of the seamless background I produced.
Then I uploaded the image to Procreate, but I had to set the image format up for A2, before starting, I had a bit of trouble, as the dpi was still very low and the resolution came out a bit on my Ipad Pro first Generation, so my partner and I looked it up and found the graphics card on my Ipad was not large enough to hold a image like that on Procreate, so I borrowed his which did carry a larger graphics card to do this and worked on my poster there on Procreate.
Poster 5 Design and Development
The last person I overheard happened to be two girls talking about my UAL tote bag, I guess they didn’t think I could hear them? turned out one of the girls had one too in black but claimed she got it from her friend. The conversation went on to her saying that she told another girl this (third party person) who mistaken her for a student, and claimed she went to SOAS university. Then says the other girl commenting how so “much cooler” it was that she did?
I didn’t know what to make of it at first. I was angry that she compared her uni to mine at first glance but then it didn’t make sense to me that she carried a tote that she pretended that she didn’t attend? this baffled me most of all.
I thought I could make a silly ransom note poster using news paper letters to form it using a scalpel and cutting board, I thought it could have a theme of anonymity and mysteriousness that could intrigue people to read what this girl had said. It was a simple idea but her words really stuck in my head for so long, ahaha.
I laid down the words constructing the sentence together based off my design plans.
The final result before editing.
To make this poster, I wanted to play around with the filtering, I first uploaded my image onto Affinity Photo, I then darkened the colours then used “Invert” to change the colours, I quite liked it and decided to keep it that way as my finished poster, I think it made it look much better in contrast of colours in my opinion rather than a plain white background. I used tippet tool and paintbrush to get rid of the imperfections in the image as well.
Poster 6 Design and Development (Workshop)
For our workshop exercise, we paired up and came up with 6 different problems/ delights/ excitements/ boredoms broke these down into a two worded statement. From the word “excitement” I thought of “Pending Pandemic” as we had received the news not so long ago that a vaccine had been made and approved, plus that life would return to normal by the end of next year. This makes me hopeful and happy, as to why I chose such a statement. I then thought of connections that could relate to this, time was one of them.
We were then instructed to be given black graph sheets that we could cut and experiment with, I thought perhaps I could try make letters out of numbers, like an upside down 7 could pull off being an L or a turned over 9 as a b, this fascinated me, so I drew them out on my dot gridded notebook as a reference to cut them out later on the grid sheet with a scalpel. I arranged them around and tried shaping them out to look like letters across the A2 sheet, even using parts of numbers to make this. Once I was happy with the arrangement, I started tracing around by numbers and began filling the drawings with a graphic pen.
Then taking a photo of my drawing, I uploaded it onto Illustrator and traced over with Pen tool and anchor tool to create curves of the letters. Once I tweaked the shapes up to look neater, I started playing around with the font colours, and attempted my idea for the buffering grey wheel that I made before.
I tried looking at old photos I had taken, and thought of symbols that represented hope, the rainbow was an experiment to see if it fit well with the poster (also befitting as it was also the same symbol used for the paintings children did for the NHS). So after setting up the layout with the rectangle tools, I placed my rainbow image that I painted on with Procreate using paintbrushes, and placed the Typefaces on top. I wasn’t too happy with the colour scheming, it felt a bit off even after adjusting the opacity of both images.
So I looked up another symbol of hope, and apparently cherry blossoms are a symbol of hope and new beginnings just like the season of Spring. So I dug into my old photos and got out an old photo I took of a cherry tree in my local park, placed it using the rectangle tool then my various different coloured Typefaces on top of the image, I liked almost all of it as the colour scheme this time complemented each other well. I mostly liked the white font on my letters, and adjusted smaller in the middle of the poster most of all. It was mostly trail and error making this but I was satisfied with the end result.
