Final Pieces and Evaluation
Poster 1-Locality
This poster didn’t come out as I had planned, but it was interesting learning how to print and trace in an alternative way. I’m sort of ok with it but I think it could’ve come out better in my opinion. I do like the colours and layout that I had planned for it though.
Poster 2- Headline from a newspaper
This was a bit more fun to do as it mostly was a poster made from scraps of news paper. I didn’t which one I liked better to choose, but these are my top versions of this poster. If I had to do it again differently, I think I would’ve liked to add cut out of scissors, or use paint to paint in the background in a more contemporary way. Otherwise I was fine with it in the end. The feedback given was mostly positive but I was told that maybe I should edit the letters on Photoshop or Illustrator to make it stand out a bit more.
Poster 3- Instruction
This was a bit more constructive for me as I looked into signs and colour to represent my typefaces that I designed for PPE disposal awareness. I think the feedback I gained from class helped a lot for me to understand what I don’t see, and how to fix it, mostly for the word in the middle and the”E’s” with three lines to resemble hands. But sometimes I realised that a negative can be a positive in improving something as well. as long as it was constructive criticism it was ok for me to know what I should improve on. Overall I was pleased with the improvement in the end result.
Poster 4- A text I last received
I’m mostly happy with this poster, and is my favourite out of all the posters for its pretty aesthetics (as I mostly diverse well in illustration). I learned a new skill on using ProCreate in making seamless patterns that looked professional, plus had my first attempt on handwriting/calligraphy on my Ipad. I’m thinking to use my Ipad as a tablet in future when attempting this again and practise in making it more neater. What I think I could’ve added was more details such as the time and name.
Poster 5- An Overheard Conversation
This was a bit of an odd one for me but I still liked producing this none the less, as it gave me many angles and perspectives on this predicament I came across a few weeks ago. When I read it again it just makes me wonder why people feel the need to put themselves higher than others to feel better about themselves, but at the same time it was very silly and kind of funny that she carried a UAL tote bag, as my partner tells me “If she didn’t think UAL was so great, then what’s she doing carrying a UAL tote and not a SOAS tote bag?”, which was quite true.
I liked how it came out in the end, this was the first time I liked something I made that was inverted in colour, I don’t know why, it just sort of organically came out looking like it was intended to look like this, which is a kind of an end result I usually like, I guess that is what’s so nice about experimenting with things, you never know how things will come out unless you try it. The last thing I noticed to do was to centre the writing to make a neater layout, so with InDesign, I created background using the same colour with the tippet tool and rectangle tool, then placed the image above in the centre using the guide lines and ruler.
Poster 6- Workshop
This workshop was also a collaborative one but explorative one. I found and learned a new way of coming up with ideas with just words alone as inspiration and not in a literal sense, but to find connections in meanings.
Learning Outcomes and What I could improve on in the future
My main issue during this unit was prepping to use Workflow, as I didn’t set enough time aside to be familiar with its functions, this was mainly my fault for assuming that I could transfer all my work from Word documents. To be more prepared next time, I think I need to familiarise myself with new ways of working and new tools tp understand and ask if I am ever stuck on anything to my tutors. I also realised another fault in me is that I don’t speak up enough, or raise a question to participate during classes and concerning my work.
However, concerning the posters, I think I did ok, this was a learning exercise and I learned so many ways of making Typfaces across different platforms including working by hand first. I hope to advance further in taking in what I have done and learn more ways of making Typography.
Assessment Workshop
With these workshops I’ve divided up the areas I feel needs improving with the next unit. I think I’ve realised I need to engage myself more with my teachers and fellow classmates to gain and process information further. I did feel my partner and I did work very well for our collaborated video however I think I need to feel more comfortable in working in a group, and engaging with them, such as the feedback sessions, I could have sought out for more feedback for the rest of my posters to explore what needed to improve.
Also to mention is engaging with my tutors to understand how to use things such as workflow was a big missed opportunity to explore and learn, and to ask their opinion and feedback on my posters. I think for researching, I should try read more books to explore and learn about my given topics to gain a bigger insight to express my thoughts and opinions on the given subject.
Overall I feel I must gain more confidence in engaging more in class and asking more questions rather than being shy about it, I feel it could help me more as a learner and grow with this. I want to set a goal in improving on this so I may be able to express and engage more within my projects.
